A Carousel of Informative Talks

Impact

Beechwood school had a morning of interactive and informative talks delivered to their sixth form students. The talks, delivered by staff from Study Higher, Oxford Brookes University, Reading University and Slough Borough Council NEET service covered a range of key issues including developing soft skills for further study, understanding employer expectations and considering alternatives to university.

It was a carousel style activity with the sixth form students split into three groups and rotating around the workshops enabling them to participate in all three.

Developing soft skills for further study: students participated in a team activity, taking on various roles in the design and construction of a LEGO structure. This activity challenged them to use a variety of soft skills. Following this there was a short talk on the value of soft skills including communication, collaboration, problem solving, leadership and time-management, also offering practical advice on how these skills can be developed.

Employer expectations: Slough Borough Council NEET service delivered a talk reflecting on the key skills and attributes employers look for in graduates and those leaving school. The talk challenged students to produce personal development plans aimed at enhancing their employability. Two apprentices from the council were also present to talk about their experiences of finding employment.

Alternatives to university: Oxford Brookes University delivered a short talk based around their Gear Up project, exploring alternative higher education options including degree apprenticeships, HND’s and a variety of other vocational routes
